You don’t need us here at Horizon Auto Center to tell you how important your car’s brakes are. Nobody wants to imagine being unable to slow down and stop their automobile. We are going to list the signs that your brakes are going bad below so you can bring your vehicle to our shop at the first indication of trouble.
Burning Brake Smells
Burning brake smells are a sign that the brakes are overheating. Specifically, the odor may smell like burning chemicals or burnt carpet. The former is a sign that the brake fluid is boiling. The latter is a sign that the brake pads have glazed.
Changes in the Brake Pedal
Changes in the brake pedal are also an indication that you have a problem with your brake system. For example, if you have air bubbles in the brake lines, the pedal will feel soft and sink to the floor. This is also the sign of a bad master cylinder.
Illuminated Dashboard Lights
Your brake system may warn you on your dashboard. If the ABS light turns on, the anti-lock brake system has a malfunction. If the Brake light turns on, the brake system has a problem that may lead the brakes to fail.
Leaking Brake Fluid
Another sign that your brake system is failing is if it starts to leak brake fluid. Brake fluid can leak out of the brake hoses behind the wheels or from the master cylinder. Low brake fluid makes it difficult to stop your automobile.
Noises When Using the Brakes
When you apply the brakes, the only thing you should hear is your engine’s RPMs slowing down. If you hear squealing, squeaking, or grinding, your brake system needs to be serviced at a minimum. For example, the brakes will squeal if they are overheating.
Pulling to the Side
A stuck caliper will make your vehicle pull to one side when you apply the brakes. It is important to have the caliper replaced as soon as possible to maintain control of your vehicle when you are using the brakes.
Vibration When Using the Brakes
Finally, your automobile should not vibrate when you press down on the brake pedal. If it does, you probably need to have the rotor surfaces recut because they are warped. This is a service that should be done every 60,000 miles.
